Good review, though I’m surprised no one seems to notice that the story is written by Tom. Had I written it in third person, it would have been very different, but Tom does tell the story from his perspective, and that means that it’s not an objective narration. Based on later events, he exaggerates Charlie somewhat, and he also underestimates Rod. Tom’s views will develop over time, and he will revisit a few points later. But his great value is that he is honest about what he thought and felt at the time, and he is unusually diligent in that respect.
